About the Role


Calancombe Estate is seeking a hard-working and energetic Assistant to the Winemaker/Vineyard Manager to join its small and friendly team. Calancombe Estate near Modbury, South Devon is family owned and extends to approximately 23 hectares and comprises almost 8 hectares of vines including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir Precoce, Bacchus, Ortega, Pinot Gris and Madeleine Angevine. In addition to vines, we grow apples, blackcurrants and rhubarb from which we make delicious still and sparkling cyder, apple brandy, cassis and rhubarb gin. The Calancombe Estate is also home to Dartmouth English Gin and Dartmouth Navy Strength Gin.

Requirements




The successful candidate will report to the Head Winemaker/Vineyard Manager and ideally will:

  • Have previous experience of vineyard work or if not, is keen to learn and has a keen interest for grape growing;

  • Be happy and keen to work outside and take part in activities such as Winter pruning, Summer canopy management, mowing, spraying, soil cultivation, weed control, crop monitoring and harvesting,

  • Have previous tractor experience and spray qualifications or is willing to obtain spray qualifications (at our cost) if you join us;

  • Have a winemaking qualification and previous experience as a Cellarhand or if not, is willing to support our Winemaker with all tasks related to wine and cyder making and keen to learn;

  • Hold a proficiency certificate for forklift operation;

  • Have a strong team-working ethos, as well as the ability to quickly and willingly adapt to new tasks and be willing to help out;

  • Be flexible in working extended hours when necessary, for example, during the harvest period;

  • Be prepared to show guests around the vineyard and winery and lead wine-tastings.
